The Bauer Proto-R delivers excellent shot performance with great feel, light weight, and responsive flex that players love—but it has a catastrophic durability problem. The vast majority of owners report blade failures (especially at the heel/taper area) and shaft breaks occurring within 30-60 days of purchase, often during light use by youth players. The 30-day warranty is essentially useless since most failures happen just beyond that window, leaving customers with $300-400 sticks that don't last a season.
Pros
- + Excellent shot response
- + Light and balanced
- + Great feel and control
- + Excellent shot pop
- + Light and responsive
- + Lightweight feel
- + Great whip/flex
Cons
- - Blade fails at heel
- - Shaft breaks easily
- - Fails beyond warranty
- - Inadequate warranty
- - Blade breaks easily
- - Shaft cracks quickly
- - Heel failure pattern
- - Blade heel failure
- - Shaft breaks quickly
- - Fails past warranty

Broke after maybe 10-14 uses
I play men’s league and this stick snapped about 4 inches up the shaft from the player making a pass. Used maybe 10-14 times. I shot better with a cheap X3. Plus side it is very light. Pros: Lightweight. Cons: Poor Durability, Poor Craftsmanship.

Stay away
Solid stick but durability is under poor. Broke after 32 days and Pure Hockey refused return. Disappointed in Bauer and Pure Hockey

Extremely Disappointed – Broke After Just Weeks
My 13-year-old son worked hard and saved his own money to buy this Bauer Proto hockey stick on June 17th. He was so excited to use it — but after only one game and about a dozen practices, it broke right where the stick meets the blade on August 7th. That’s less than two months of light use, and just past the 30-day warranty window. For the price of this stick, the durability is completely unacceptable. It’s heartbreaking for a young player to invest so much into something that fails so quickly. We will not be buying this stick again, and I do not recommend it to anyone looking for quality or longevity. I should have read the reviews before we purchased, I see others have experienced the same disappointment.

Awesome stick, horrible durability
I got a two-for of this stick off from another source (P28, 95 flex), and honestly, it was an awesome stick. I loved it. BUT BOTH OF THEM SEEMED TO BREAK WAY TO EASILY!!! BUYER BEWARE!!! One snapped up near my hands, and the other at their "taper technology"/high-heel of the blade.

Adding to the legion of broken hearts- and sticks
My 11-year-old son was beyond excited to buy the white Bauer Proto-R hockey stick. He saved up all his money for months to get it, choosing it over countless other things because of the hype and reputation surrounding this stick. Sadly, it ended in major disappointment. After just 8 games, the stick snapped—completely unusable. He's played hockey for years and has never had a stick break, not even lower-end models. To see the one he was most excited about break so quickly was heartbreaking. It wasn’t abused, mishandled, or used outside of normal gameplay. For a top-tier product at this price point, we expected durability and performance—not something that barely lasts a few weeks. It’s incredibly frustrating to watch your kid pour their savings into something only to have it fail so soon. I can’t recommend the Proto-R based on our experience. For the money, we expected quality and longevity, and unfortunately, Bauer really dropped the puck on this one.

# Bauer Proto R Hockey Stick Review Summary The Bauer Proto R is an innovative stick featuring exclusive Boron fiber technology (used in fighter jets and race cars) that delivers twice the compression strength and stiffness of standard carbon fiber, enabling faster shot loading and release. The stick combines Boron with Bauer's Premium Monocom construction, asymmetrical carbon layering, and an extra shaft layer for improved durability, resulting in a lighter, more responsive stick that significantly outperforms previous models like the Agent.
